A frame's size is shown by three numbers printed on the inside of the temple arm, for example 52-18-140. They're in millimeters and tell you the size of the lens, the bridge and the temple. With those three numbers and a ruler, you can tell whether a frame will fit before you try it on.
What the three numbers mean
- Lens width (52). The width of each lens at its widest point. It's the number that changes most between a small and a large size.
- Bridge (18). The distance between the two lenses, where the frame rests on your nose.
- Temple length (140). The length of the arm, from the hinge to the tip that sits behind your ear.
The measurement that matters most: total width
The three numbers don't tell the whole story. What defines the fit is the total width of the front, hinge to hinge. The right size has a front that's just slightly wider than your face at the temples: not tight, not sticking out.

How to measure at home
- Grab a pair you already own that fits comfortably, sunglasses or prescription.
- Lay it on a table and measure the front in a straight line with a ruler, hinge to hinge.
- Also note the three numbers on the temple, if there are any.
- Compare those measurements with the size of the model you like. Our What's My Size? guide gets you there in a minute.
How the right size feels
- It doesn't squeeze your temples or leave marks behind your ears.
- It doesn't slide down your nose when you look down.
- Your eyes sit close to the center of each lens.
- The frame doesn't touch your cheekbones when you smile.
- Your brows sit level with the top edge of the frame or just above it.

ORBITAL sizes
We organize our models by size so you don't have to do the math. If you already know yours, go straight to it:
- Size S sunglasses, for narrower faces.
- Size M sunglasses, the in-between fit.
- Size L sunglasses, for wider faces.
- Size XL oversized sunglasses, for a roomy fit or a bigger look.
FAQ
Is sizing the same across brands?
No. There's no standard for S, M or L: every brand defines its own. Millimeters, however, are comparable, so look at the measurements, not just the letter.
What if I'm between two sizes?
It depends on the look you want. The smaller size gives a secure, understated fit; the larger one offers more coverage and presence. For sports or an active day, go with the more secure fit.
What if I choose wrong?
You have 30 days to return or exchange, as long as the product is unused and in its original packaging. See our Returns & Exchanges policy for details.
